Kalator Ad Service Blog
Server Upgrade
We've just finished updating the ad server!
Sadly, the upgrade was not as smooth as we would have liked. During the upgrade we lost a few hours of historical data. We had planned this upgrade for when most people didn't have anything big running, but there were a few campaigns that will be missing some data. Since no one uses the Open Source display data for anything, the missing stats have no impact on the open source campaigns.
The service was interrupted during the upgrade which took about 2 hours - from 11:00am PST to about 1:00pm PST. During this period no ads were being shown, but the server was responding so no one should have experienced any page slow downs (our apologies if you felt any adverse effects).
With this upgrade, Kalator can now display Flash ads. If you have an account on Kalator you can now simply upload a SWF file instead of a GIF or JPG, and Kalator will take care of the rest.
However, in the Open Source ad streams we will not serve flash ads. Obviously, that means submitting an ad for your open source project in a flash format wont do. We do welcome your JPGs and GIFs!
Server Upgrade
Last night we upgraded the
Kalator server to a newer version of PHP and the most recent version of
OpenAds. While the server wasn't really slow before, it is now very snappy.
Thank you for helping spread the open source message!
Kalator is Back!
Kalator, the open source ad server, is back online!
I've gotten a contract to do some ad serving, and in order to fulfill the contract I needed to setup, and host, an ad server. I figured since I have to have the ad server anyway, I might as well resurrect the
Kalator service and start serving open source ads again.
Interestingly, there were many requests still hitting
Kalator.com for ad requests. It seems there were a few people who never gave up on
Kalator - cheers!
Hopefully this contract will be enough to cover the bandwidth costs of the ad server. If you think having a free service to show open source project ads is a good idea, please support the service by showing ads, and (if possible) make a small donation by clicking the donate button on the
Kalator web site.

Kalator is down
The Kalator server is down. We believe we are undergoing a DOS attack, but we are currently looking into the problem.
Our apologies for any inconvenience.
Email Woes
We had a few email problems over the last couple of days so if you've sent mail to general or ads at kalator, please resend them as they probably wound up in /dev/null.
Our apologies about the email funkiness, but the problem is now fixed.
New Server
The new server is up and running. DNS is propagating so for the next few hours some people will be getting ads from the old server and some from the new.
While moving we found a few performance bugs that we'd like to address. We fixed the ones could effect the live server, but we found a couple in the reporting area we'd like to get squared away. So on the new server the
live click though rate feeds will be down for a bit while we polish that code up.
We are still on track for the beginning of next week for full cut over, and everyone should notice a performance boots from the new ad server and connection.
On a side note, someone asked if we would accept larger that 12KB ads now that we have a bigger connection. We'll still only take ads that are 12KB or less because we don't want to effect load time of the sites showing the open source ads.

Kalator Blog Setup
Well, it seems kind of silly to post about the blog being setup on the blog itself, but the blog needs a first post so here it is.
We are in the process of moving Kalator to a beefier server with more power and bandwidth. The change over should be transparent and done within the week. Many thanks to
YellowBadger for donating the pipe and box.
We've also been taken back by the number of people running the ads. We have a lot of people showing the ads now so if you've got an open source project, it behooves you to submit and ad - it's free and you'll get a lot of exposure for your project.
